The night sky was absolutely beautiful. The sky was clear, the stars were bright, and it was COLD! lol. It was the Leonid Meteor Shower and at around 2am we went out to watch it. It was exciting when we saw a shooting star. There were lots of other people around so whenever there was a meteor, there'd be shouts. It was fun. We only stayed for 20min because it was cold, but it was the first time we'd seen shooting stars and it was just amazing. Isaac said that there'd be a lot more at around 3-4am and I wanted to see it, but it was really cold and we did have class in the morning. But still, I'm really glad we got to see at least a bit of the shower. <endljcut></endljcut>

SO yesterday was Thivviya's birthday. Ahahaha it was fun.

We went clubbing!! She is so cool. Her sister and her best friend had come over, so the four of us, plus Priya and Ahad went to Ale House. Thivviya had come over to help me pick an outfit (because i've never been clubbing before and had no idea what to wear and vivian wasn't online to help me lol) and then we taxi-ed back to her place for hair, makeup and predrinking. Her best friend, Amanda, helped me do makeup (just eye) hehehe. Amanda also mixed drinks (ginger ale plus vodka? i think). Lol i was sipping from my cup the whole time we were getting ready. the others just downed theirs. Thivviya took a while to get ready and by the time we were good to go, it was like 12-ish. When we got to Ale, there were lots of people and lots of dancing. Thivviya and Amanda wanted to drink more because they were still sober. So we went and bought drinks at the bar. Thivviya got me a Killer Koolaide. Lol it tasted like candy. They got stuff like rum...i think...and liquid cocaine....i think. Haha so Priya and Ahad joined us and we sat for awhile, talking and rocking to the music. Thivviya then ordered a shot of Pornstar for me. Ahad insisted we get Kamikazes (Ahad doesn't drink so even he didn't know what it was) so i drank another shot of that. Thivviya and Amanda still weren't drunk enough but we went to go dancing anyway. There were people grinding!!!!!!!!! like...actual actual grinding...and i was soo shocked. Vahirda actually switched places with me so i wouldn't have to look =3 Then priya came and grinded behind me ^-^;;;;; But Vahirda is so nice. While dancing she'd grab my hands and start dancing with me because i don't know how to dance and i probably looked really bad...lol she's so nice. and she'd like...protect me when guys were dancing too near x) but yeahh she's so nice. well. we were all totally sober and thivviya's feet were hurting so at around 1:45 we returned to thivviya's house. they started to eat and watch pineapple express so i took a cab home.

the whole time, thivviya was so protective of me. she'd tell me, if you feel bad just tell me, ok? and she'd keep asking me if i was okay. <33 she's a really really rough and tough person but with her friends she's so caring <333 and all in all, even though i didn't get drunk (like she wanted me to) i had a really good time. thivviya's teaching me the ways, so that in toronto, i in turn, can teach lily the ways. YES LILY. we will go too =)))))

p.s. thivviya has vowed that i will get trashed on halloween. we shall see.

I just went on the BEST FIELD TRIP EVER. it was so fun. it is hands down the best thing that's ever happened in my university academic career. I learned so much and it was just awesome.

Day 1: So i woke up at 5:50am (ok 6:10) and got ready to leave. We were supposed to meet at 6:30 at BioSci, which is the farthest building from my res. I had stuffed my sleeping bad, my huge ass flashlight and my boots into my duffel bag. Halfway there, my duffel bag was getting way too heavy so I changed my shoes and wore the boots and I put my water bottle into my backpack, for easier carrying. I got on the bus at 6:30 exactly, huffing and puffing, and low and behold there was like...four people on the bus. Two of my friends were on the bus (jess and michelle) so i talked a bit with them and then fell asleep-ish. more people got on the bus and then one of the t.a.s got on and took attendance. we were two people short, but at 6:50, we left for QUBS. I slept most of the way there.
When we started entering the less-populated areas, it was really beautiful. the trees were just starting to change colour and we passed by a lake with mist on it. at one point we saw pheasants (or some type of wild ground bird) on the road. on the other side of the bus, jess saw a deer (which i missed =( ) It was cool. We first stopped at an area that was like a clearing. It was SO COLD. i was wearing two sweaters, jeans, one layer of socks and my boots. There was frost on the ground and the air was so cold. We had to look for the traps that the peoples set up the night before and see whether we had caught any small mammals (like deer mice, voles, shrews, etc.). The ones Priya and I were assigned to had nothing. We got back to the group and one trap had something in it. So the lab coordinator, Brenda, opened the trap and....there was nothing inside. It was a little disappointing. But it was fine. We got back on the bus and i put on another pair of socks, cuz my feet were so cold (i stayed dressed like that for the whole trip!) then we continued on our way to QUBS proper, which is where the actual station and living spaces and all that are. We arrived at QUBS at around 8-ish. We got off the bus and assembled in front of the main building. It was a nice building lol. really. then they explained more things to us, about the kitchen, the living spaces, and the activities. we were then assigned to our groups (i was in group D) and our living spaces. i was lucky! i got the nice building with heating, 2 kitches, 3 washrooms, a living room (with a tv! that only had one channel) and nice beds. it's called the white house. priya was my next door neighbour. i shared a bunk bed with a girl named emily, who was in the same group as me and was thivviya's friend. thivviya was downstairs in her own room, and it was great! they had told us that our sleeping conditions would be terrible and that there wouldn't be heating so i packed so much stuff i didn't need lol. oh well. it was funny because all the girls were assigned to sleeping areas that had heating, but some of the guys were not so lucky. yaa....so after setting our things down, we went back to the hub (the main building) and started on our first module. my group's first module was "field observation." we all picked up a binocular each and followed our leader, mark. he led us behind the white house where there was a potter trap set up, a trap for birds. and there was a bluejay inside!! mark then went in and grabbed the bird and brought it to us. it was so COOL!! he then started talking about bluejays; he was banding it, sexing it, determining the birds' age, and it was just so cool. one of the people in my group got to hold the bird. after mark banded the bird and recorded everything, we went to the next trap. it was in a clearing, surrounded by pine trees. there were two chickadees and a red-breasted nuthatch caught. these small birds kept biting mark and it was kinda funny. they were so cute. so he did the same thing with these birds. then we set off to a different kind of trap, a mist net. at first even i couldn't see the net. it was in a forest and it was really windy. leaves kept getting trapped in it and we removed the leaves. there were no birds in that one either. so we went to set up our own mist net and mark put a recording of bird calls under it to try and lure birds to it. then we went back to the first trap and there was another bluejay in it! yay...lol the next module was theeee...CHIPMUNKS! yeah...first we had a little seminar about QUBS and the research that goes on there...and we looked at little stuffed mammals from the 1940s, then we went out! to stalk chipmunks. there were little platforms all around the area. in pairs, we were assigned to a platform and we were to put seeds and watch the chipmunks that came to feed. once the chipmunks were done feeding, we were to follow them, locate their burrow and flag it. my partner was emily. at first we had no chipmunks so we sat on a rock and chatted. then one chipmunk came. i was in charge of timing and emily was in charge of chasing. soon after the first one came, a second one came. then the first one came back. then the first came back AGAIN. and it happened like that. no. 1 came like 6 times, no. 2 came like 4 times, no.3 came like 2 times, and no. 4 came once. when there was one there and another came, the first one would chase the other one off and the other would then wait for the first to leave. sometimes they were patient, sometimes there was lots of chasing. they were so cute! they'd stuff their faces so full of sunflower seeds and then scurry off....so cute. and i was able to get really close to one. i was refilling the sunflower seeds and i think it was no.2 that came back and really wanted food so he came right up to me and just started eating. i backed away and watched him from a few feet away. <3333 other groups weren't so lucky. most had no chipmunks go to their platforms. the next one was the insect module. we went to this meadow by the water. the peoples had set up pitfall traps for insects that were placed randomly around the meadow. we were to empty the preservatives holding the insects into a jar, take the sticky sheet from a pole, and replace it. i was partnered with emily again. it was pretty cool. we had an insect who's body was missing on our sticky sheet. after that, we were to sweep the ground using insect nets. there were four nets and five pairs so emily and i did the handcatching of insects first. emily caught a katydid!! they're big and green and look like leaves. it was sooo cool. i caught an ant and a leafhopper...lol other people caught spiders and caterpillars and moths and other cool things like that. when we were walking back to the station, we saw a deer!! she was sitting down and as we stared at each other, she slowly got up and moved farther away. i had never seen a wild deer before!! just cause i don't go to UTM...jeez. but it was so cool and i was so happy. yeah...then we ate dinner, and everyone was tired. at 7pm we had to listen to a seminar given by mark, about research and field biology. it was okay, but i had to pee and i was sleepy. after that, at around 8:30, we went for a night walk. it was cloudy so there were no stars. priya, thivviya, emily and I linked arms. it was so funny cuz i'm so short. priya's like 5'9 and thivviya's 5'7. at one point i was in between them and i felt so tiny lol. we had a virtual astronomy lesson. floyd, one of the managers at qubs, showed us where the stars were behind the clouds using a green laser pointer (it's so cool, i want one!!). floyd also did owl calls, hoping to attract owls. he's so good at it!! too bad it was windy and drizzling....no owls came to greet us. but there were fireflies!!! they was like...single ones randomly along the road. they were so prettty!! i was so excited...on the way back, i just hung on to emily's arm with my eyes closed and i just walked. i was sooo tired. we went back to the hub and i had hot apple cider and an almond cookie (SO GOOD... those almond cookies were the best things ever). after our snack, it was like 10:30, we went back to the white house and went to sleep. i brushed my teeth and washed my face, changed into sleeping clothes and went to sleep.

next morning, emily had set her alarm for 7. i heard it but just went back to sleep. she got up though. i woke up to someone else's alarm, at like 7:20...i brushed my teeth and changed into yesterday's clothes and waited for thivviya and priya to finish so we could go to breakfast together. after breakfast, at 8:30, we started our next modules. my next module was the habitat one. we hiked with our professor around qubs. along the way we would stop and different habitats and look around and talk about the area. he would ask us questions about research and observations that we made. we went in a forest, by a lake, and even in a marsh! there was this bridge that crossed through the marsh. we walked among cattails (i almost got hit on the face by a cattail twice) and passed by a beaver dam (a beaver dam!!!) and a rickety bridge that we had to cross one by one, to the other side. professor eckert showed us the plant he did his doctoral thesis on and asked us questions and stuff. after that, we crossed back through the marsh, and climbed a really steep slope. it was wet and soggy...but it was so fun. we were 15 mins late for our next module, but it was finnne. our next module was the plant one. we were in a field of sumacs and we were to measure it in various ways. i paired up with a girl named danielle. it was funny because the main point of it was to do random sampling. but because danielle and i were about the same height (rather short) we weren't able to reach the top of the trees we randomly selected. so we "randomly sampled" the ones that were easier to reach. lol. it was cool...measuring trees and stuff. during the whole four hours, i had not sat down once. by lunch time, i was so tired and hungry. after lunch, we had time to pack and our last module started at 2pm. our last module was the fish one, which i was so psyched for. we got to go in the water in the chestwaiders. i went with a guy that was rather tall and a little water got into the side of my chestwaider and my left side was wet for the rest of the day. we measured sunfish, weighed them and scaled them. there was a guy in our group who was bent on beating the record for heaviest fish. the record was 150g. and we beat it! we first got one that was 175g and then he got one that was 190g. it was so exciting. it was really really fun. i had such a good time! even though it was raining, it didn't even mind the rain! =))

so we got on the bus at like 4:30 and left qubs at 4:45. we got back to campus at 5:30. i had to trek all the way to isaac's place with my heavy duffel bag because he had my keys.
but like. i had the best time. it was so amazing and i learned so many things. the things i saw and the things i did were just....amazing. i had so much fun, especially with my friends that i don't get to see that much and got to meet people that i would probably not talk to in a lecture. it was a really really great experience and i would totally do it again.

but now i have two assignments due this week that i have to get started on. it's not my fault. they gave us the data on friday and my class is on tuesday. oh well. fighting!

It's really not that funny, but for some reason i just couldn't stop laughing. I guess it was funny because Isaac said no. We had both used it yesterday so it was funny that he said no. It's a huge ass nailclipper too, so it was also funny when he gave it to her and she had a surprised reaction. AHHH

Today I had an interview type thing for a research assistant position in one of the psychology labs here and Queen's. I was not prepared. She just asked like...work ethic questions and stuff like that. I have no idea how I did. But i really hope i get it *fingers crossed*

Just now, I was so homesick. I saw pugs twice today and when I got home I researched pug pictures and then I got really sad. I told Isaac that I wanted cheese, because we always have cheese and home. and then i said, "we also have..." and as i was thinking of home, i couldn't finish because i just started bawling. goodness...this is my third year and i'm still getting homesickness. OH LIFE. why do you do that to me.

Actually, i'm really excited for this year because my courses all look really interesting. I would be studying now but i don't really know what to study so i'm blogging. I hope I do really well this year so that in the future, i will have lots of opportunities to do what i really want to do. yey me

The loud noise woke up Charly, who was sleeping on the floor, and he came and climbed up on me (I was sitting on a chair and he never sleeps with someone on a small-surfaced chair). He looked up at me, as if to say, "it's okay, i'm here for you," and lay his head in my arms and fell asleep again. And those tears just welled up....
Today I learned how to avoid those Jehovah's Witnesses...in other news.

My mom said today that she feels kinda bad that besides Janson, Jacob and Joshua, we're not really close to our cousins. Well. When we went to dinner today, I think that we had a rather pleasant and enjoyable conversation at the mini-dinner table. It was me, Vivian, Jacob, Julian, Michael, Michael's gf, and Ryan. I think it went pretty good. They asked questions about us, we asked questions about them, they told stories, etc. etc. and it was nice. We've never really talked like that before and I think that it was good. Lol it was a good change from finding things out about them second hand (via Motherdear).

I guess we're not close because we live far away and we barely see each other...and because I'm shy...and they're alll guys. For Doris and Nancy and Justin, they're so far in age. When we were allllll really younger, we used to have fun because we were kids and kids are never shy. But then those awkward teen years creep up on us and we become quiet and reserved. Then that phase passes and we are sociable and you know, we have fun. After all, we're all family.
CRAZY THUNDERSTORM! again. at dinner, there were rolling blackouts that interrupted our wii playing. lol yea

<lj:music>Jimmy Eat World - The World You Love</lj:music>

I went to my first funeral service today.

The deceased was a person from my mother's side of the family. It's actually a really far distance...my mother's father's father's brother's son's wife. So, my grandfather's cousin's wife. When my two eldest aunts went to live in Hong Kong, it was this auntie that took care of them and provided for them. Apparently, my parents took us to visit her once, but I don't remember. Originally, it was just going to be my mom going with her sisters, but then Janson called and said he was going. So my mom decided to take Vivian and me. I didn't want to go because I didn't want to be sad, and I didn't really know her. But my mom told me that it was a happy funeral, because she had died of old age. So I agreed and we three girls trooped over to Janson's house, where we all met and took off from. So, it was my big aunt, my second aunt plus husband, my mom and two girls, my youngest aunt and her son. Before we left, my grandma told the three kids not to laugh too loud or be fidgety. We went there and when we got there, it was my aunts that were laughing loud and my eldest aunt scolded them, saying how my grandma had told us to be good and they weren't being good. haha. Inside the chapel, we met people and there was hugging and introductions. We met the deceased's sons and their families. We signed the guestbook and got the little package thingies. We had some refreshments and then it was time for the funeral. It started off rather unexceptional, with a chinese priest reading off a service book of prayers and blessings. The really emotional part was when the deceased's granddaughter spoke her eulogy. This granddaughter was raised by her because when she was really young, her mother had died of a tumor and her father left. So the granddaughter's speech was really moving and personal. It made me cry. But I didn't shed a tear because I felt that it was a happy funeral. Before the service, her sons were laughing and joking around with my aunts and uncle. It sounded like my distant relative really did have a fulfilled and happy life. While it had it's ups and downs, she really left a great legacy behind in her children and her grandchildren, and in the people who knew her and loved her. If it hadn't been for her taking in my two aunts in Hong Kong, they might have never had the opportunity they did to move to Canada to study and therefore my mother might not have moved here either. So, I'm really grateful to her. In a way, I owe my peaceful and wonderful life to her and I thank her.

There was a man in the second row who was crying really hard. I noticed him as soon as the service started. He was a really old man and looked really sad. I found out later that that man was the granddaughter's father. The granddaughter, understandable, said not a word to her father, but from his tears, I understood how much of an impression my relative must've made in his life. Apparently, she had forgiven him for leaving, while his own daughter had not.

Then we ate our candies and left. To spend the dollar, we decided to pool our money ($8) and get $8 worth of gas. It was fun watching my aunts and my mom talking and laughing together. My mom and my youngest aunt had never lived with my two eldest aunts. Before they were born, the two eldest had already gone to Hong Kong. This is why I really admire their relationship right now. How amiable and so loving it is, even though they really aren't that close. Even though my own mother had the three of us all in a row so that we'd grow up together, our relationship is not great at all. I hope though, that one day, the three us of would have the relationship my mother envisioned for us.

When people say "thanks for coming," I say "take care boh jong" (excuse my bad pinyin). Not "...." I learned that today.

Summerlicious was marvelous!

I went to summerlicious with Vivian and Janson. Our dinner reservations were for 7pm at the wonderful Biagio Ristorante. I wore a LBD and heels and my sister wore this shirt with leggings and Janson wore a dress shirt, vest, dark jeans, and white running shoes. I was so scared I'd be overdressed but I actually felt really nice at the restaurant. We got there at about 7:05pm. OMG walking in heels was SO killer. My heels are only about 2-3 inches high but I was failing so badly. We got threre, after taking a wrong turn at Yonge and turning around. It was a quaint little restaurant across the street from a beautiful flower garden (there were pugs!!!!). There weren't that many people in the restaurant and it had a very comfortable, lovely ambiance. Our first thing was this little flaky thing with olives. so good. then our appetizers came. I ordered a lobster bisque. it was sooooooo good. it was creamy and a little sweet, it had so much flavour. SO GOOD. vivian had a salad thing with these white blobs. it was so funny when we ordered. Janson went first and he ordered everything in English. Vivian went next and she tried the Italian but gave up. The waiter was then like, no what is it? so she tried to say it again in Italian, with struggle lol. Then it was my turn and I said it in Italian and he said that I said it really well. =) I WANNA LEARN ITALIAN!!! when we finished with the appetizers, our waiter came back and said something in italian to me, and i was like o_o. and he was like, si ou no? and i said, si..? lol and so he took away our plates. after our appetizers, i ate a lot of bread (i love bread) and then our main course arrived. Janson and I had the veal and Vivian had the seafood risotto in marinara sauce. The portions were not small at all! Vivian didn't clean her plate, even with Janson's help. I did but I was SO FULL. I shouldn't have filled up on bread. For dessert, I had the tiramisu, Janson had the chocolate mousse, and Vivian had the gelati. I was so bloated afterwards. After we left the restaurant, we went to take a little walk in the garden. My feet were killing me, but I had gotten used to it. My sister said that wearing heels is like drinking wine. Before you do it, you really want to try it. When you do, it's not so good at first, it takes getting used to, and it adds the perfect touch to a meal/look. All in all, I enjoyed it a lot! I had been really excited for it all week, and after hearing everyone else's experiences at summerlicious, i was getting a little, shall i say, nervous. But it totally lived up to my expectations. I would not go there any time soon (it was expensive) but i highly recommend it. molto bene!

and then crap happened at home but all is good now. =) love

<lj:music>The Fray - Enough for Now</lj:music>

I had a very good weekend.

Friday:
It was so nice in the morning when i was reading outside on my deck and Charly joined me. I put my feet up on a chair i brought outside and Charly slept on my legs on the chair. so cute!

I visited Iroquois and the class I did my practicum with. I was so happy to see them, the kids and my teacher. I could feel the excitement for the end of school. Everyone was happy to see me and I them. I went to watch the kids dance routines and they were great. Absolutely adorable. I'm gonna miss them~

It was so fun when Lily came over. Just going to the park, sitting and chatting and playing with Charly. This is what I love about summer - the casual strolls, the friendliness of neighbours, the excitement of children at the park, the happiness of dogs, the conversation between friends.

Saturday:
Walking in the drizzle with only a t-shirt and sweatpants on. So refreshing. On Saturday, we had the first family dinner together at the dinner table in the longest time. We were all home to eat dinner and it was just so nice. we had crab! my favvourite~

Sunday:
We went to the beach! again~ this time, we walked for an hourrrr before turning around. When we go to the beach, we usually start walking right on the beach so Charly can play in the water and Kevin can skip rocks. Then my dad would find a path up the cliff side into the forest and we'd walk back towards the car. But today, we just kept walking and walking, for about an hour on the beach. Charly played in the water. We put him on a rock in the middle of the water and since Charly hates water, it was funny when he didn't want to get off the rock. But he did eventually and he doggy-paddled to shore~ I also took off my shoes and walked in the water. It was so fun. So when we got tired, my dad tried to find a path up the mountain but there was none! So we kept walking. It was so hot and sunny! Charly was soaking wet and my feet were sandy. When my dad finally found a path, it was super steep, more steep than usual. After the climb, my back was so sweaty! Just from the climb!! I had to grab on the weeds and tall grass to hoist myself up. My mom was so slow and deliberate. My dad had to turn around (he's always in front) and help her up. When we got up the mountain, it was a living area, with houses and streets. We saw a bus pass by just as we started walking back towards the direction of the car. So we kept walking and walking, behind houses, along cliffsides, in forests. I got this super huge mosquito bite on my arm. Finally, we reached this road beside the train tracks and my brother decided to run to get the car and pick us up. So he ran and we kept walking. Charly stopped walking after a bit and my mom carried him. She keeps saying "I'm supposed to be carrying grandchildren, not a dog!" Lol but we all know she loves char char. So kevin finally came and we left and went to Tim Hortons. yay~

This evening, charly and arnold were sleeping in the living room. they were both flat on their tummies. so cute. i love them. i love my family. i love summer.
